Boys & Girls Clubs of the Upstate’s Strategic Plan for 40/30 Challenge Integration
40/30 Challenge – a goal of the
United Way, USC Upstate, and The Spartanburg County Foundation, that 40% of our population (aged 25 and 35) hold bachelor’s degrees by the year 2030.
40/30 Breakdown for Boys & Girls Clubs:
- Those who will be 25 years old in 2030 are 4 years old this year.
- There are 10,000 free-lunch students in
Spartanburg
County public elementary schools
- This group has a school drop-out rate of over 50%, as high as 70% in some sub-groups
- Our results demonstrate that we effectively reach and impact this group in our elementary school-based Clubs. Our members overcome the three main causes of future drop-outs and go on to graduate.
Our 40/30 Goal: To maximize high school graduation rates of free lunch students in
Spartanburg
County by having a Club accessible to every free lunch student in
Spartanburg
County elementary schools.
Our 40/30 Objective: Open a sustained Boys & Girls Club in every elementary school.
A 10 Year Plan – "Vision 1000 to 5000”:
- Serve more students in our existing Clubs
- Open new Clubs in partnership with school districts – 25-30 new Clubs over 10 years.
o Make Clubs accessible to the children who need us most in
Spartanburg
County
o Today 2000 have access to a Club and 1000 attend daily, 8000 don't have access.
o To reach these 8000 we must continue expanding our organizational capacity until we reach 5000 children a day.
- People – Develop the team and structure (new management structure is in place) to serve 5000 children a day in 40 Clubs
- Partnerships – Attract the school districts that will host our best practice/low cost model Boys & Girls Club and the program partners (arts, leadership, sports, etc.) to enhance programming.
- Funding – Multiple strategies for sustained funding:
o Economies of scale – today’s 1000 members cost about $1500 per child per year, the incremental cost of a new member will range from $380 in an existing Club to $800 per year for a new Club.
o Partnerships with school districts will generate 4 years of grant funding for each new club and provide time for developing each club’s sustained funding beyond the grant.
